COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE MAINTENANCE DREDGING REQUIREMENTS OF ALL MAJOR PORTS AND NATIONAL WATERWAYS AND STRATEGIES AND TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE THE COST IN SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM
Problem Addressed :
Perform comprehensive studies through continuous field monitoring, computer aided numerical modelling and custom model development for optimized maintenance dredging for all minor, major ports and national waterways. The solutions also include Coastal and River Engineering solutions for slipway, bank protection, safe navigation and design of protection of structures
Relevance under Sagarmala :
This project is relevant under Port Modernization, National waterways transportation, Industrialization and engineering solutions development.
Why now :
As development of deep-water ports become more expensive, multiple use of the facility would lead to higher techno economic feasibility. Carrying out this research in the present context would lead to multiple benefits in port, waterways and coastal development.
Current Status in India :
IIT Madras actively involved in providing solutions to ports and coastal community for a decade. IIT Madras is very competitive and pioneer providing suitable solutions to ports and coastal community for more than a decade through their multi-disciplinary team.
Global Status :
Globally, there are institutions and companies play significant role in providing solutions specifically on port management and structure design studies. This study involves local knowledge and better understanding of the coastal and marine environment. IITM through their decadal experience gained sufficient knowledge to provide expert solutions both in India as well as in the region.
Timelines of completion :
Total project duration is 36 months, with the following milestones.
1st year | Assess present dredging requirements and methodologies using numerical modelling and field monitoring supported by funding from ports. |
2nd year | Numerical Modelling for maintenance dredging optimization and using the data obtained. |
3nd year | Quantify dredging requirements and methodologies, including disposal in safe and environment friendly methods. |
