DEVELOPMENT OF A CUSTOMIZABLE 3D NUMERICAL HYDRODYNAMICS AND SILTATION TOOL
Problem Addressed :
Availability of complete numerical models for day to day use by industry and academia is lacking. This is the main issue addressed in this project. Sagarmala proposes to expand and augment port, coastal and inland waterway economy in a massive way. This will need understanding of interacting forces in the water body to provide hydrodynamics and sedimentation impacts due to the project activity. The capacity of consulting in India is limited to major firms and IITs. This capacity must be enhanced for India to be self-sufficient and also to become a regional hub. Presently available commercial tools (such as MIKE21 etc.) are expensive and incomplete. Hence, this activity will provide a tool to expand and enhance numerical modelling capability of industry and academia together.
Relevance under Sagarmala :
This activity is relevant under Port Modernization and Connectivity Enhancement. This will also have impact in Community development.
Why now :
India is on the verge of becoming a major hub for knowledge based services in this sector. This activity needs investment of time and resources into scientific base for results. Though India had the scientific base for over 50 years, there has not been focused effort to achieve standard products such as MIKE tools. On the other hand, with the lack of scientific base manpower and cost implications, this activity will naturally move to India.
Current Status in India :
IITM has developed huge amount of computational tools. Apart from this, IITB and IITKgp also have some limited capabilities. IITM is the leader in this area.
Global Status :
Several universities and firms have developed similar tools such as MIKE by DHI. However, their market share is very less due to the cost and also lack of local knowledge. IITM do have a more than a decade experience in understanding and solving the coastal engineering problems.
Timelines of completion :
Most of the tools are already there and being used for execution of projects. We will improve and customize them in 3 years time. The first version will be available in 18 months.
Key competencies and stakeholders involved :
Mathematical modelling and software development. Involvement of major ports and waterways will be there in terms of measurements and field data.
Short Term Impact :
Economical modelling solutions for practical problems.
Medium Term impact :
Regional leader in hydrodynamic modelling solutions and product availability.
Long term impact :
Major player in providing hydrodynamics software and solutions.
Physical location of the project :
NTCPWC, IITM Campus.
